RISE Alternative Provision Staff Training Day Focuses on Safeguarding and Emotional Literacy Assessment

Empowering Staff to Better Support Students and Enhance Bespoke Provision

On [date], RISE Alternative Provision hosted its latest staff training day, dedicated to further developing the skills and knowledge of our team in two key areas: safeguarding and emotional literacy assessment. The event not only provided invaluable insights into how we can better support our students, but also gave our staff the opportunity to collaborate, share ideas, and collectively contribute to the enhancement of our bespoke provision.

A Day of Learning and Collaboration

The focus of the training day was on equipping staff with the tools to more effectively assess and support students' emotional literacy, a vital aspect of their overall wellbeing and development. Our Qualified SENCO and Qualified Teacher, who have over 12 years of experience in mainstream schools, led discussions and practical workshops aimed at identifying emotional literacy needs in children. This included strategies for assessing emotional competencies such as self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, and relationship management. These assessments will help us develop specific, targeted plans to support each child’s emotional development, ensuring we meet their individual needs.

Emotional literacy is the foundation of learning and social interaction,” said Daniel Smith, our Qualified SENCO. “By identifying areas of need early and providing targeted support, we are setting students up for success both in the classroom and beyond.

The session also emphasized the importance of safeguarding within the school environment, ensuring that staff are not only aware of the signs of potential abuse but also know how to respond in ways that protect children and promote their safety and wellbeing. Safeguarding is an integral part of our work at RISE, and this training gave our team a chance to refresh and deepen their understanding of the policies and practices that keep children safe.

Our Core Values in Action: Engage, Succeed, Thrive

At RISE Alternative Provision, our values of Engage, Succeed, and Thrive underpin everything we do. The training day was an opportunity for our team to not only engage with the latest safeguarding practices and emotional literacy tools but also to work together in a spirit of collaboration and continuous improvement.

  • Engage: We are committed to actively involving our staff in discussions that enhance their professional development. This training day was designed to foster engagement with new ideas, concepts, and best practices that support our mission of providing tailored, effective provision for every student.

  • Succeed: By enhancing our staff's skills in emotional literacy assessment and safeguarding, we are ensuring that our students have the support they need to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. The training directly impacts our ability to create safe, supportive environments where students can reach their full potential.

  • Thrive: Ultimately, our goal is to help every student thrive. By building a team of knowledgeable and skilled professionals who understand the importance of safeguarding and emotional support, we are equipping our students with the tools they need to thrive in and out of school.

Collaboration for Greater Impact

In addition to the training content, the day provided an invaluable opportunity for staff to collaborate with each other. Sharing experiences, strategies, and ideas for improving our bespoke provision allowed us to deepen our understanding of how to best meet the diverse needs of our students. Staff members from various areas of the school came together to discuss ways to refine our approach to emotional literacy, ensuring that every child receives the personalised attention they deserve.

“It’s always great to hear different perspectives and ideas from the team,” said Taylor, one of the trainers. “We all learn from each other, and it makes our work even more impactful when we are constantly adapting and improving our methods.”

Looking Ahead

The success of this training day marks another important step forward in RISE Alternative Provision's commitment to providing the best possible support to our students. As we continue to focus on safeguarding, emotional literacy, and the overall well-being of the children in our care, we will remain dedicated to fostering an environment where every child can Engage, Succeed, and Thrive.

"I feel a lot more confident! Now, I can go out into the community and talk to people, like when I order my own drinks - it's something I didn’t feel brave enough to do before. I’ve also learned to understand my feelings better.

I can tell when I’m upset or stressed, and I know how to use strategies to stay calm and in the Green Zone of Regulation, so I can handle things better and feel more in control."

"The Mentor has a good relationship with R. She communicates and works well with her when she is having a bad day. There is great communication with myself- the reports are detailed and I enjoy reading them. I know RISE has greatly helped my daughter build her confidence and become a happier child."

"O didn't have any support other than myself to help her and was struggling to cope with life, having the opportunity to have Leila in her life has opened her mind to so much. We were extremely struggling to cope so having Leila's support has helped tremendously.

It has given me hope that not every door is shut to her and there are people out there that want to help, and she can get support that she needs. O was extremely negative about anyone being able to support her as no one had in the past so this opportunity has definitely helped her to have more faith in people and to trust the process."
